Today, Malaysia get new Finance Minister, Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul bin Tengku Abdul Aziz. Who is Datuk Zafrul and what is his qualification?
YBM Tengku Dato’ Sri Zafrul bin Tengku Abdul Aziz (born June 25, 1973) is the Group Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director of CIMB Group Holdings Berhad, a leading ASEAN universal bank and a world leader in Islamic finance with presence in 16 countries worldwide. He is also the Chief Executive Officer/Executive Director of CIMB Bank Berhad and President Commissioner of PT Bank CIMB Niaga Tbk.
Outside of CIMB, Zafrul is currently a member of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), representing Malaysia in promoting intra-trade and collaboration within Asia Pacific. Further, as an advocate of Malaysia’s socioeconomic development, he currently sits on the Board of the National Sports Council of Malaysia, in addition to being a Trustee of the Perdana Leadership Foundation and a member of the National Higher Education Entrepreneurship Council under the Ministry of Education. He is also an Honorary Commander of the Navy Volunteer Reserve under the Royal Malaysian Navy.
Zafrul has four children (daughters, YM Tengku Zahra Jasmina and YM Tengku Zahira Eusnie and sons, YM Tengku Zaeem Khalif and YM Tengku Zayn Aqeel), and is married to YM Raja Datin Sri Johanna Raja Arshad. His passions include keeping fit through running (he has completed all 6 marathons under the Abbott World Marathon Majors), cycling and swimming, and developing the youth through his participation in various organisations such as the Kalsom Movement and Teach for Malaysia.

The chairman of CIMB Group Holdings, Datuk Mohd Nasir Ahmad said: “Tengku Zafrul has served the group for six years, when he re-joined in 2014.
“He has done an outstanding job, shaping CIMB’s transformation under our T18 and Forward23 strategic plans.
“His energy and commitment to CIMB will be difficult to match but he leaves behind a better organisation with a stronger footing where he has united and instilled a strong CIMB culture.”
Nasir said that on behalf of the board, he thanked Zafrul for all his contributions to the Group and wished him well in his next role.
“I am humbled by this enormous responsibility, especially at a time when the country is facing unprecedented economic challenges.
“I undertake to give my best to the nation and am looking forward to serve with all the relevant stakeholders in ensuring we remain steadfast and, in the spirit of inclusivity, work together to realise our collective aspirations,” said Tengku Zafrul, who will soon be appointed as a senator, in a statement.
Based on Muhyiddin’s announcement earlier today, Tengku Zafrul’s deputy ministers comprise Datuk Abd Rahim Bakeri and Mohd Shahar Abdullah.
